COVID 19 SPECIAL
Ahoy there! Here is another quiz to challenge your memory – this time about mentions of real explorers in the books. However our fictional friends would not think much of spending much time indoors, so why not get out and about in your local area and have a go at the TARS Scavenger Hunt attached as well. You will also find the answers to the last quiz about animals in the books attached – how did you do with it?

How did you get on with cooking S&A recipes? I have heard from a couple of people who made curried eggs. I look forward to getting more photos of your creations, some of which will appear in the January-April issue of The Gulch. Please send them to jane.pippinfort@googlemail.com . While we are on the subject of food, here are the answers to the What Did They Eat? quiz, which I’m sure that you will have got right, and a word search to find food eaten in Swallows and Amazons to challenge you. A new quiz is also attached, this time testing your knowledge of some of the non-humans who appear throughout the books. Have fun!
Sadly we can’t get together to cook up Mate Susan’s recipes, but we can at least think about them. Why not make yourself a Seed Cake (recipe attached) and sit down with a slice of it to tackle the attached quiz on food in the S&A books?
Finally, please find attached the answers to the Signalling to Mars quiz.
You could also try cooking up some of the dishes eaten in the books at home. If you have a garden that you are able to light a fire in even better, but most of them can be cooked indoors. If you have blued your birthday money on a mincer you could have a go at Cannon Balls – the recipe is in Chapter 20 of Pigeon Post. Personally I have found that adding milk to the mixture makes it too wet, but perhaps my bread was not dry enough. If you don’t have a mincer try the dish at the start of Chapter 4 – it is easy enough to break the pemmican up with a fork. If you want to try a dish from a different book, have a go at the Curried Eggs recipe attached. This one is suitable for vegetarians. Sorry vegans, the only food in the books that I can think of for you is Baked Apples (if you can find a biscuit tin and a fire) or Blackberry and Banana Mash, for which you will have to wait another month or so. Do let me know how you get on and send photos of your creations for inclusion in the next edition of The Gulch.

There’s also a bit of light-hearted fun to be had working out the Famous Sailors. The answers to Beginnings and Endings are also attached. We hope you got them all right!

Many apologies for an error in the answers to Don’t Get Scurvy which were put together in rather a hurry. Congratulations to Mary Pike for putting me right on this. The quotation about the big red Dutch cheeses was in fact from Peter Duck and the one with “lots of apples … and the right sort of chocolate …” is from We Didtn’t Mean To Go To Sea. How did you get on with the Gibber Quiz? You will find the answers attached if you are ready for them. Did any of you send the Swallows off on an exciting adventure? You will need to check your maths if you did! We are still in lock-down and they will have had to stay at home just like the rest of us. Attached is a quiz based on Secret Water and also a coded message to keep you busy in the days ahead. Swallows and Amazons for ever!

Whatever you generally do at Easter it is quite likely to be different in present circumstances, but we hope that you have an enjoyable time. Fortunately chocolate is still available. As you will doubtless have noticed it is important to Ransome’s characters, so here is a chocolate-related quiz for you to have a go at as you tuck into your Easter egg.
